Puri, Parida, Das bring Orissa back to winning ways

Samanta Chandra Sekhar College Ground of holy city Puri proved to be an auspicious venue for Orissa as it brought the home team back to winning ways wth an innings and 182-run drubbing of Tripura in their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match today. This was overall 33rd win and 17th by innings margin in a total of 170 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa.

New Orissa skipper Rashmi Ranjan Parida and left-arm spinner Jagannath Das cornered glory in the lop-sided match, scoring a sublime century and bagging a total of eight wickets for 60 runs respectively.

Before their sterling show at the SCS College Ground, which became the 11th venue of the state to stage First-Class match, Orissa had played 10 matches without a win. Out of the last 10 matches, they had drawn nine and lost one.

Incidentaly, Orissa had achieved their last win in Ranji Trophy also against Tripura in November 1998. In terms of head-to-head record against Tripura, the latest victory was 13th in 15 matches for Orissa and 10th by innings margin. Orissa middle-order batsman Rashmi Ranjan Das and wicket-keeper Yashpal Mohanty made their first-class debut in this match.

In the absence of regular captain Shiv Sundar Das, who was busy playing Wills Trophy for Board Presidents XI, Parida not only led Orissa for the first time, but also powered the team to huge victory with a career-best knock of 193 (239 balls, 25x4, 1x6) in their first and only innings.

After Parida won the toss and decided to bat, Prasanta Mohapatra and Pradip Das gave Orissa a solid start, stitching together 121 runs for the opening wicket. Mohapatra hit a 116-ball 54 (9x4), while Das slammed a career-best 68 (165 balls, 6x4, 1x6).

Taking charge thereafter, Parida put Orissa in commanding position with two big partnerships. He put on 108 runs for the fourth wicket with P Jayachandra and followed it with another 128 runs for the fifth wicket with Rashmi Ranjan Das. During his majestic knock, Parida passed 2000 runs in the first-class matches.

Both Jayachandra (53, 69 balls, 7x4) and Das (63, 69 balls, 9x4, 1x6) also contributed a half-century each. After making merry with the bat for more than four sessions, Orissa finally declared their first-innings at 545 for eight with Yashpal Mohanty unbeaten on 31.

In reply, Tripura were bowled out for 172 and forced to follow on, condeding a first-innings lead of 373 runs, folded up for 191 in the second innings. Orissa clinched victory with a day to spare, thanks to a career-best haul of five wickets for 31 runs by Jagannath Das in the second innings.
